Boss DR-110 "Dr. Rhythm"
The DR-110 was the last analogue drum machine from Roland/Boss. Like
the earlier Dr. Rhythm models, this is a fairly simple machine, with only
six different sounds (bass drum, snare, open/closed hihat, cymbal and clap).
These are of excellent analogue quality though (not unlike the sounds of
the TR-808, for example).
There is a reasonable number of pattern memories, and the programming
is made easier by an LCD matrix display. Sadly though, an important feature
(for SHotQ) is missing: Swing or Shuffle! For us, this limits the usefulness
of this machine considerably. Still, we have used it now and then, e.g.
on "The Stampede" and above all on "Night Train" (where
the Doctor acts as rhythmic main engine and sends trig signals to other
devices).
SHotQ's DR-110 is slightly defect: the trig output is loose and sometimes
the unit has a tendency to vary the tempo spontaneously - just like a real
drummer! By the way, for this reason the Doctor was fired from its previous
job as drummer in Beskbergs old synth band "Kontroll".
