Yamaha DX-100

The DX-100 is the smallest member in Yamaha's now classic DX family. Like many of the later DX models, it uses four operator FM synthesis. Let's admit right away that we haven't spent much time programming new FM sounds, no matter how fascinating this is, but used the DX-100 as a quick, extra sound source when needed.

The DX-100 has a four-octave keyboard with small, narrow keys, unfortunately glitching a bit on our instrument. However, you can play it from another MIDI keyboard and thereby get access to the instrument's velocity sensitivity. This is what we did on Topzy for example, where the DX-100 was considered the best instrument for doing the Basie piano parts. The same number also features the DX-100 played by means of a Yamaha WX-7 MIDI wind controller, which gave excellent results after some practice. In our little fauna of analog synthesizers, the DX-100 has a very special digital niche of its own. We hope to take advantage of this more in the future.
